What is an author brand?

When we think of building a brand as an author, we think about how our audience feels when they see our books, our name, and our platform.

What many authors misunderstand about branding as an author is that there is a difference between branding, marketing, and audience building.

For example:

• Marketing = getting attention.

• Branding = what people remember after they leave.

• Audience building = creating relationships.

I want you to take a minute to think about what your audience/reader would say if they had to describe your brand in three words.

When we talk about consistency, we refer to:

Authors also need to focus on keeping these the same across their platform:

Whether an author believes they have a brand or not, they do.

The real question is: Are they intentionally shaping it, or are they letting others define it for them?

Most authors think that their target audience is:

• people who like thrillers

• young adult readers

• romance fans

However, this is not what directly defines your target audience. These simple descriptions are simply naming a label on a bookstore’s shelf.

What we need to think about is:

• What their emotional needs are

• Their reading habits

• Their shopping habits

Remember: Your genre tells you where your book sits in the store, but your target audience tells you who is going to pick it up.

Defining Your Audience More Specifically

Try not to focus on age and gender. Why? Because the genre of Young Adult, for example, includes readers from 13 to 45 years old. There are other details at work, such as their specific interests within the genre, that help you narrow your target reader.

• What does your reader want to feel?

• What are they escaping from? (Daily life, a dead-end job?)

• What tropes or endings satisfy them?

For example, does your target reader want a romance that is comfortable and cozy? Or do they enjoy a romantic storyline that involves more twists, turns, and chaos?

Ask yourself: My reader reads this book because they want to feel…”

Where Your Readers Actually Are

When trying to find your target audience, online platforms are often the easiest option to gain more reach.

However, as the author, you don’t need to be everywhere. This is why it’s helpful to know:

• Where is your target audience

• What content do they respond to

For example:

• Thriller readers → often gravitate toward fast-paced hooks, twists, and discussion threads

• Romance readers → emotional quotes, character dynamics, and relatability posts

• Fantasy readers → worldbuilding, lore, and immersive content

This portion may take some experimentation. But know it also means trying to put some content about your book on social platforms and keeping track of who responds. This in itself begins to provide you with information about your target audience.

It tells you (based on 10 to 20 interactions at minimum):

• The average age range of your audience

• Where they frequent

• What content they respond to

• Where they shop (based on what they post about books they read and such)

Pay attention to and note:

• Saves

• Replies

• Likes

• Shares

It takes time and effort that pays off in the long run.

Why is this?

The book’s cover is the first impression readers get. And furthermore, readers do judge books by their covers.

Nothing like a little pressure to make it that much more difficult. But don’t forget to take into account the fact that we also need to mix in the right elements, such as the typography, images, color scheme, and title, to attract the audience of your genre.

What authors struggle with is: Do I make my own cover, or do I hire someone? If I make my cover, where do I even begin? If I hire, how much money will I need to spend?

Let’s explore what the process would be like to create your own book cover.

Step-by-Step Creating Your Book Cover

Here is the hard truth: creating a book cover good enough to sell is difficult.

At the beginning of my career, I didn’t have much money to hire a cover designer, so I tried my hand at making my covers. Needless to say…they weren’t great.

Now, they aren’t amazing by any standards. But thankfully, I managed to sell some copies, and it helped that book reviewers and bloggers reviewed the books for me, helping them along.

Realistically, I knew that my books deserved better. So, I got to work. I researched the market for both genres. Read a ton of articles and watched tutorials on how to make book covers, and managed to update my covers.

So, if I were to go back in time, here are the steps I would have taken to create a book cover that sells.

Step 1: Genre and Market Research

Whatever genre your book falls under, one thing remains the same. Every genre’s audience has particular expectations when it comes to the cover.

What do I mean by this?

Each genre is consistent with:

• The types of typography used

• Color schemes

• Images

• Graphic or image styles

• Word choices

This is why it’s important to conduct market and genre research. However, before you begin, you need to know what you are looking for.

Before you begin:

• Write down 20 keywords that pertain to your book (this also helps with SEO and finding similar comparison books to yours)

• Write down your genre and your target audience (age, shopping habits, and trope interests)

Having this ready to go will help you when you begin to find comparison books to learn from.

Now is when the real work begins.

Let’s pretend I am starting from scratch for my book, Anywhere Else, as an example:

Now that I have these things ready, it’s time to dive into research. I am going to be looking at book covers for the elements I covered earlier, and I am going to read the book description for keywords similar to mine.

I want to begin by typing into a platform like Amazon, Google, or wherever you buy books: New Adult Romance Books. This will give me a starting point.

The first book I looked at was Heart Bones by Colleen Hoover:

This is All Last Summer by Stephanie J. Scott.

This is the kind of research you want to be conducting, but like, 20 more times. Make a list of:

• Tropes of your genre

• Keywords that match yours or could match yours

• Color Schemes/ Typography/ Page counts/ Title Words (these are also Keywords)

• Composition of the cover

It takes time and effort, but once you are done you will learn the different styles your genre expects and what they are looking for.

Step 2: Planning

Once you feel you have a good handle on what elements you need to make a cover that will catch your audience’s eye and meet their expectations, it’s time to start brainstorming.

We need to decide:

• What elements of your book should be included on the cover?

• What aspects of your book would draw readers in?

• What colors do you want to work with?

• What art style do you want to go with?

When looking at what style I wanted for Anywhere Else’s makeover, I saw more covers similar to All Last Summer (as shown above), so I started looking at what I could do.

I use Canva.com to create all my covers. You can simply go to the create button on the left-hand toolbar, type in book cover, and it automatically pulls up a blank book cover file that works for Ebooks.

Looking at covers in the romance genre, I saw lots of light blues, purples, reds, pinks, and bright colors. I ultimately went with a lavender type of purple. But now I needed to decide what I wanted to show on my cover. My original cover had my main character’s truck (it’s a big part of the story) and photos of two males and one female.

Then I got to thinking: it’s a romance novel, so maybe I should focus on the characters.

So, this is when I went into the elements and typed in girl to see what could pop up. After all, Leena is the main character, so it makes sense to make her the focal point.

It took me a long time to find out what girl I wanted, but when I finally found her, it just clicked.

Next came the love interests. I searched in the elements for: guy and found this one.

But there wasn’t another one with the same art style, so I actually drew my own character for the other love interest.

At the beginning of my career, I knew nothing about how to get myself in front of readers. I mean, it took me 4 years to reach a decent follower count on social media, and even that doesn’t feel like it does anything for my book sales.

But, as time went on, I began to see authors doing events and getting into bookstores. Back when I began writing in 2014, when I began writing and publishing, self-publishing was still new. So, self-published authors were beginning to pave the way for how we got ourselves in front of readers. It wasn’t long before I found myself lost in trying to figure out how to get these things for myself.

What do we need to chart a plan?

Before we even explore how to create opportunities for ourselves, we need to figure out a few key details to help us do so.

Where do we find our audience?

We first need to figure out how to gain access to our audience. This begins with figuring out your target audiences:

• Age demographic

• Shopping habits (Independent stores, chain stores)

• Preferred medium (paperback, eBook, hardcover)

Now, I’m aware that these are factors that we should already know from anything we are already doing online for our book, but it changes when we begin looking at in-person habits.

When we determine these factors, we then provide ourselves with a starting point.

What do we have to offer?

Now is the time to figure out what we have to offer our audience.

Obviously, we have our books, but there are other options to consider.

• Merchandise

• Special editions of your book

• Reading kits for kids

For example, for my children’s books, I needed to offer something additional, so I created a Read and Learn kit. This kit includes one of my children’s books, a craft, and lessons that pair with the book.

When we determine what we have to offer and think outside the box, we can open possibilities we hadn’t previously considered.

Possible Partnership Considerations

As indie authors, we need to consider what partnerships we can create within our community to help us connect with our audience.

So, what venues can we partner with?

• Libraries (local author events, book club readings, story time readings)

• Independent Book Stores

• Chain Book Stores

• Local Merchant Stores (Storefronts that allow crafters, authors, and more to be vendors)

• Local Stores (Grocery stores, tourist shops, and more)

• Festivals and Events (Local fairs, town events, farm shows, craft fairs, and more)

There are tons of opportunities for authors to create partnerships within the community, but the key is that we need to make it happen for ourselves.

For example, there is a vendor store called Expressive Avenue near me in Lancaster, PA. It’s a shop that allows local vendors to pay for a space in their store on a monthly basis. By being part of this, I open myself up to a group of customers that I haven’t previously been able to reach. And what do I offer there?

• Merchandise (t-shirts, bookmarks)

• My Books

• Read and Learn Kits

And I occasionally go in and switch up my inventory so things feel fresh for return customers.

How Do We Market It?

Marketing is the beast that no author likes to handle, but the truth is, it needs to be done.

So, now the question is— what kinds of marketing are you comfortable with?

• Creating and placing fliers for your books around town on bulletin boards with a QR code

• Paid marketing on social media

• Word of mouth marketing through friends and businesses

• Partnership marketing with a partnered business

Without marketing, you might as well never try to put your book anywhere. So help yourself out and figure out which marketing you’re the most comfortable with.

A solid author’s platform can be envisioned as a tree.

You, the author, are the trunk.

One branch is your website, the twigs being your blog, books, about me section, contact section, and more.

Another branch is social media, the twigs being the platforms you use, and the content topics you post about.

Time, dedication, and planning are what are required to configure a solid author platform. Because when we try to build an author platform too quickly, it’s likely to appear rushed, incomplete, and unappealing. And overall, we want your website to be easy to navigate.

Your Website

Every author should invest in an author’s website.

Why?

Because this is your home base. You OWN it. Unlike social media, where you are essentially in a rented space, followed by followers who aren’t seeing all of your posts.

The question is, what should your website have to feel complete and serve your audience well?

A blog

Blogging has been named outdated by some, but in truth, blogging is very much still alive. And for the most part, it’s just evolved to look a little different on some platforms.

Having a blog section on your website is important for two reasons.

1. If updated regularly, it proves to your website visitors that your website is still active.

2. It gives your audience a reason to keep returning to your website.

Every author is different in terms of the content they post on their blog.

Some will post snippets or stories, sneak peeks, and updates about their authors’ events. While others write short stories on there for readers. And in some cases, authors also teach others about a topic and will post informational blog pieces.

What you post on your blog is up to you; however, if you decide to have a blog, make a plan.

Plan to post on your blog monthly, bi-weekly, or even weekly.

The frequency of posting blog articles depends on the amount of information you have to give, the time you have to get it onto your blog, and your sustainability.

This section is important in helping readers connect with authors.

Why?

Because it enables readers to connect with the author as a human being, and not like a company.

This is perhaps the most important section of your website, the work your audience comes to see.

I have seen this done a few different ways:

• Book covers on the homepage

• Separate tabs for each book, followed by a page from the individual book

• Make the covers clickable

• Add a description for each book

• Provide a link to where they can purchase the book

Contact Me

Did you know that if someone from a podcast, newspaper, or website is looking to contact you, they will check your website first for contact information?

Having a small form on your website that allows people to leave their email, name, and a short message will ensure that you can get in contact with them.

And you can also leave your email and phone number (if you have a business phone) for people to contact you directly.

(Admittedly, this is a section I still need to add to my website.)

You can also list where people can find you, such as social media platforms. And if you make them icons for them to be clickable, they can easily find you and follow you.

Social Media

Social media in itself is a useful free tool that, if used well, can yield amazing results.

However, this also means learning how the platform works, what content does well, and how to reach your audience there.

What social media platforms should authors be aware of?

• X (formerly Twitter)

• Facebook

• Instagram

• Threads

• TikTok

• BlueSky

The key thing to remember when choosing your social media platform is what medium you are comfortable with.

I say this because some platforms are long-form post-based, some are short form, some are photo-oriented, and others are video-oriented.

Another key thing to remember is that once you have figured out what best suits your needs, stick to one platform to begin your social media journey. Because beginning with more than one will feel overwhelming. And honestly, you can’t be everywhere.

Post Content

When I began on social media as an author, I had no idea what to post. I posted things, and then I saw how it did.

But what helped me the most was:

• Paying attention to what other people on the platform were posting

• Engaging with other people’s posts

• Finding my people

• Posting often (3-4 times a day)

In the beginning, when you post things, it will feel like no one hears you. But all it really is is that the platform hasn’t helped you find your people yet. So give it time, stay dedicated, and be consistent, and it will yield results.

If you are worried about trying to keep up with posting on a consistent basis, then:

• Plan your content ahead so it’s ready to go

• Use a scheduling app or see where the built-in scheduler is on the social media platform you choose (this one is usually free)

Engagement

Social media is meant to be a place for you to be social.

This means you should spend your time:

• Sharing other people’s posts

• Commenting or starting conversations on others’ posts

• Following people who matter to you

Many times, when people don’t see growth or movement on social media, it’s because they aren’t doing these three things.

Notice what’s missing:

2. Does this post hold value even if no link is clicked?

3. Does this sound like a person, not a promotion?

If the answer is no to any of these, don’t post it yet. Figure out a way to reframe it.

A Weekly Framework You Can Actually Maintain

Creating consistent goals for yourself is key to ensuring that you make progress.

Here’s a structure that works across platforms and across seasons, not just during launches:

Four posts per week. One purpose per post.

• Perspective
  A belief, observation, or realization about writing, reading, or the themes you explore. This positions you as someone worth listening to, and if done correctly, will start a conversation.

• Process
  A moment from the work itself: drafting, revising, cutting, doubting a choice for a character. This builds familiarity and humanizes the work, which is what readers look for in a writer.

• Proof
  Showing up in small ways, such as sharing reader comments, lessons you learned, small wins, and moments where you feel validated.

• Invitation
  The book appears here, but as context, not pressure. One line. One link. That’s it.

This rotation keeps your content varied without becoming chaotic.

How to Adapt One Idea Across Platforms

The mistake most authors make is reposting the same content everywhere.

The better approach is to reuse the idea, not the format.

For example:

Core idea:
This scene was harder to write than it looks.

• On X, this becomes a short reflection on restraint in storytelling.

• On Instagram, it becomes a caption paired with a marked-up draft or writing space.

• On Threads, it becomes a conversational post about knowing when a scene isn’t working.

The message stays the same, but the delivery meets the platform where its audience is.

When Engagement Shifts, It Doesn’t Mean You’re Failing

One of the most damaging assumptions authors make is that engagement should always go up.

It doesn’t.

Organic marketing moves in phases, not lines. There are going to be quiet periods that cause you to panic, but what we need to do is adjust.

When authors react emotionally to a dip, they usually overcorrect:

• They post more often

• They explain more than necessary

• They promote harder

• Or they disappear entirely

None of these responses is productive.

The better move is to recognize which phase you’re in and respond accordingly.

When Engagement Is Low

Low engagement is rarely a content problem.
It’s usually a connection problem. So we need to ask ourselves, how do we connect with our audience?

This means instead of continuing to hard sell your books and ideas, it’s time to reconnect.

At this stage, the temptation is to either:

• Go silent because you’re exhausted

• Or post constantly because you feel behind

However, neither of these options helps.

This is when proof, used sparingly, does the most work.

Let reader reactions, quiet wins, or small moments of traction speak for you. This is all the proof you need to pull your audience in.

Volume of what you post isn’t as important as the quality here.

When You’re Burnt Out

Burnout happens to everyone, but what you do about it when it happens matters.

Intentional honesty works here. Not venting and not oversharing, but acknowledging your reality in a grounded way.

Posts that name the difficulty without dramatizing it do two things:

• They keep your momentum

• They deepen trust with your audience

When you become silent, you create distance with your audience. But when you are honest, it maintains your connection and your momentum.

When the Sales Plateau

Every book plateaus. It’s the natural progression for every book.

But knowing this isn’t a failure on your part is important.

When your sales do begin to slow, the fix is not to aggressively promote your book. This tends to drive people away rather than draw them in.

1. What phase is this book actually in?

Be honest.

• Is it an idea?

• A messy draft?

• A revised manuscript?

• A finished book that hasn’t been positioned yet?

Timelines collapse when authors don’t understand that while it needs to be followed, there are going to be times when it can be flexible.

We need to think of the drafting portion of the process as the creative stage. The stage when we are deciding what to do with our little darlings.

2. What does “done” mean for your book?

Knowing when your book is finished requires checking off boxes, crossing your t’s and dotting your i’s.

• Done drafting?

• Done revising?

• Done after beta readers?

• Done after professional edits?

• Done when it’s uploaded?

• Done when it’s launched?

• Or done when it has readers?

These are all the questions authors ask themselves as they look over their draft.

But know that your book is finished when:

• It has been fully revised

• Someone else has read it

• It’s ready to get to market

When trying to figure out how to map your timeline to publication, it’s crucial to determine what spare time your life is allowing.

Real timelines account for:

• Work schedules

• Family responsibilities

• Mental bandwidth

• Seasonal energy shifts

A sustainable timeline fits into your life. Something that allows you to steadily make progress without feeling lost or falling off track.

The key to a solid publishing timeline is knowing that it’s not about speed, it’s about continuity.

Step 1: Choose Your Publishing Path Before You Choose Dates

Your publishing path dictates everything downstream: pacing, pressure, cost, and control. Yet many authors skip this decision and start planning dates anyway, then wonder why their timeline collapses.

Here’s the distinction between the three publishing paths:

• Self-publishing offers control and flexibility, but requires lots of planning and self-reliance to get to the finish line.

• Traditional publishing offers validation and distribution, but removes timeline control almost entirely.

• Hybrid publishing combines elements of both—and often doubles the complexity.

Before assigning a single date, ask yourself:

• Who controls the schedule?
  (You, an agent, an editor, a press?)

• Who controls the budget?
  (Are you funding edits, covers, and marketing, or are those outsourced? Or are you trying it alone?)

• Who controls revisions?
  (Do you decide when the book is “ready,” or does someone else?)

If you don’t answer these questions upfront, your timeline will constantly clash with forces you didn’t account for, resulting in frustration, delays, or rushed decisions.

Step 2: Break the Process into Non-Negotiable Phases

Instead of asking “When will this be published?”, ask “What must happen, in what order, for this book to get in front of readers?”

A realistic self-publishing timeline usually includes:

2. Cooling-off period

3. Revision

6. Beta readers

7. Editing (developmental → line → proof)

8. Cover design + formatting

9. Pre-launch preparation

10. Launch window

11. Post-launch follow-through

Each phase requires a different type of labor:

• Drafting is crafting and creating an engaging story.

• Revision is running through your story with a fine-tooth comb.

• Editing is creating a readable and clear story.

• Launch preparation is strategizing and planning for the finale.

When authors stack these phases back-to-back without acknowledging the cognitive shift required, burnout is an inevitability.

Treat phases as non-negotiable containers, not flexible suggestions.

Step 3: Assign Time Ranges, Not Deadlines

Deadlines assume:

• Perfect health

• Consistent motivation

• Immediate feedback

• No learning curve

Time ranges assume reality.

For example:

• Drafting: 8–12 weeks

• Revisions: 4–6 weeks

• Beta readers: 3–4 weeks

• Pre-launch setup: 6–8 weeks

Ranges permit you to adjust without feeling like a delay is a failure. But know that if the timeline needs to be adjusted, it isn’t the end of the world.

If drafting takes 11 weeks instead of 8, the timeline doesn’t collapse; it absorbs the impact and shifts into something new.
